The Korean War
At the end of World War II, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel, into Soviet Union and U.S. In 1948, rival governments were created. The Republic of Korea was proclaimed in the South and the People's Democratic Republic of Korea in the North. The relationship between them was vile and on June 25, 1950, North Korea forces invaded South Korea. This was quickly conveyed as an act of aggression and the United Nations demanded the withdrawal of North Korean forces from South Korea.
In the first weeks of the conflict the North Korean forces met little resistance and advanced quickly. By September 10, 1950, South Korea army and a small american force were driven into the Pusan area located at the southeast of Korea. On the 15th, an invasion at Inchon fractured the North Korean war machine. In the following two months, United Nation armies pushed through North Korea. Victory was seemingly in sight but then China intervened publicly and the Soviet Union not-so-publicly on the side of their defeated Communist neighbor. The United Nation was thrown back midway into South Korea. Early in the new year, the Chinese army was contained and forced to retreat.
By the middle of 1951, the front lines began to calm down near where the war had started twelve months early. Negotiations began hopes that an early truce could be arranged. But this took two more frustrating years, during the two years forces fought on with the U.S. Navy providing air and gunfire support. Finally,on July 27, 1953, negotiations concluded and the fighting ended.
